Le Volcan is a cultural area of Le Havre and a “national stage”. It is a masterpiece of the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer built in 1982.
This complex shelters a theatre and a cinema showing independent films.
The western end of the Bassin du Commerce opens up on Le Volcan, cultural area of Le Havre and national stage, masterpiece of Oscar Niemeyer, completed in 1982. Its architectural expression comes from the doctrines of Le Corbusier.
Architecture is imagined as a veil of concrete painted white, with curves and open shapes, trying to reach a sense of poetry in architecture.
The access to this complex is a mix between ramps and stairs. The complex itself has two separate volumes: one is hyperbolic and asymmetric and shelters a theatre with 1200 seats and a cinema; the other is cylindrical and shelters a multi-purpose room with 200 to 500 seats, some offices and band rehearsal rooms.
